A CINEMA
WORTH SAVING

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Paignton Picture House was built in 1914 and thrilled audiences across Torbay and beyond for many years. World-renowned author Agatha Christie regularly watched films from her favourite seat in the magnificent balcony.

Sadly, the cinema closed its doors in 1999, sitting empty within our community ever since. After years of dilapidation, this Grade II* cinema is now on Historic England’s “At Risk Register”, with significant vulnerabilities which could lead to the complete loss of use of the building.

THE PAIGNTON PICTURE HOUSE TRUST.

In 2013, the community came together to campaign to save the Paignton Picture House and a passionate group of local people set up a charity called the Paignton Picture House Trust. Our charity aims to save this magnificent historic building, reimagining it as a dynamic cinema and arts venue for the community who worked so hard to save it.

The cinema will bring both mainstream films alongside a programme of community-led film, arts and culture that promotes inclusivity, breaks down barriers, challenges beliefs, inspires, educates and improves wellbeing.

We aim to address under-representation and improve access to the arts, whilst also contributing to positive social change in an area of high deprivation. This incredible building will also provide new spaces for cultural activities, events, community activities, live performances and exploration of local history.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

Our vision is to build a home for independent cinema, together with creative, educational and community activities.

The restoration and redevelopment of the building will save a piece of iconic local history for future generations and create a vibrant community cultural hub.
