Why do you volunteer as a Trustee for Paignton Picture House?
I grew up in Paignton, and went to the Torbay Cinema as a boy. After finishing university I returned to work in the family business in Paignton, the Devon School of English. It was whilst working there that I got involved in helping to save Paignton's heritage, initially with chairing the Friends of Oldway Mansion group. When it became clear the former Torbay Cinema needed help I accepted an invitation from Torbay Council to set up the Paignton Picture House Trust in parallel with my work at Oldway. I grew up in Paignton and want to help do what I can to regenerate it for the current and future generations of inhabitants and tourist visitors. I remember clearly how things were when I grew up, and want to contribute to regaining that feeling of prosperity and confidence. Post Covid I have been a director of English in Totnes, based in the Gatehouse there. I also work as a historian for the Singer family from Oldway.
What are you most looking forward to when we open?
Seeing its positive impact on the community and businesses - regeneration - and seeing people travel to Paignton specifically to visit.
What is your favourite part of the building?
The balcony, where I always tried to sit when I visited it growing up, where Agatha Christie used to sit with her family and chauffeur before me!
